Artisan Craft: Metal Stamping
For the past year, I’ve been on a journey. I started with my former love of creating custom slideshows and photo books and wound along many different paths, stopping to try on those things that caught my interest but then moving on once I knew it wasn’t “my thing.”
I do love to create and make things, which is why I so enjoyed working with photos, making custom slideshows and photo books. There are so many ways to be creative. But, while I love the tangibility of the photograph, I found myself “missing” something.
The last couple of months, what I tried on seems to be sticking. It’s got my creative juices flowing and feels like something that will drive my passion. It’s the artisan craft of metal stamping and metalsmithing.
Let me give you some background on what that might mean.
Artist vs Artisan
You might think that an artist and an artisan are the same thing, but there is a clear distinction.
An artist is one who performs any of the creative arts, such as dancing, painting, music.
An artisan is a skilled worker who makes things by hand, ranging from very small items such as jewelry to large furniture items and everything in between. An artisan may be one who adds aesthetic value to the object they create.
I love the definition of artisan because I want to make things with my hands. As I explored what this might be, metal stamping truly grabbed me and held on!
Why hand stamp?
One of the fun parts of this work is that part about being able to add “aesthetic value” to an object. I can take an existing item, personalize and customize a blank piece of metal and attach it to the item, so to speak.
Hand stamping metal allows you to:
- Personalize and be unique. Customize pieces with names, dates, words, designs, and special messages.
- Handcraft items with love. Impressions are made one at a time by hand giving each finished piece a unique handcrafted look.

These are products from other artisans so I will just link to the item.
Pets need collars. Add value by adding a personalized pet ID tag hand-stamped with its name and “if found” details-
When you have a family gathering or holiday-themed party, hand stamp napkin rings to add a personal, inviting touch that can be used as a take-home favor. (Really cool idea for a wedding shower!) –

Know someone who loves to keep a journal? What a great gift! Give them a journal personalized with their name or hand-stamped items that are meaningful to them.
Stay tuned as I learn more about this artisan craft. I hope you’ll continue along this journey with me!
