Family Reunion – Visiting the Past, Present and Future

Family dynamics are always changing … new babies … marriages … divorces … the passing of elderly family members. Our lives get busy and chaotic so we try to keep up with what’ going on via Facebook.

Don’t get me wrong. Facebook is a great tool to help you stay connected but it can never take the place of a good old-fashioned family reunion!

Why have a family reunion?

A family reunion is an occasion when many members of an extended family get together in person, face-to-face, and celebrate the one thing you have in common – your family tree.

What better way to re-establish family connections, get a little nostalgic as you relive old memories, revel in others’ achievements and find out what events we still have to look forward to.

Reunions give us an opportunity to go beyond Facebook, giving you and your children a chance to get to know some of those names behind the Christmas or birthday cards.

Listen – and Capture – Family Stories

Maybe you’ve heard grandpa’s story about the great fishing catch he made one too many times, but get him talking about his younger days, what it was like to live in the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s, and sharing fond memories of those long gone.

Family reunions are a great place to learn more about your ancestors and their experiences. Visit with older relatives, especially those from different generations, and you might hear some wild tales!

But what is the secret to family reunions? You or someone in the family needs to write down and capture these stories then marry them to photos that help tell the story visually. More often than not, old family stories are lost and forgotten because they haven’t been written down or the story behind a photo hasn’t been captured.

Once captured, share with the whole family. Younger family members may not be enthralled at this time, but as they grow older there will be a desire to know more about from where they came.

Family Reunion – Visiting the Past, Present and Future

Where else can you converse with three or four different generations, learning and comparing how each grew up, reminiscing about the ‘good ol’ days’ as well as what is on the horizon?

Revisit the past with stories and photos. Capture the present. And look forward to the future. There’s a lot of value in being able to save and share family stories.
